P.E. Newsletter
September News
As we saddle our way into the month of September, we are learning basic rules related to how to behave in P.E. Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will continue to test their skills in soccer. Students will learn the basic skills of soccer such as: kicking, dribbling, throwing, passing and shooting the ball into the goal. We will also discuss the benefit of playing soccer to improve our overall fitness level. In kindergarten, we will continue to work on following directions and learning about personal space during activities. Kindergartens will also learn proper ways of taking turns in line during activities that requires group work. Our goal is to gradually move into learning about other various sports in the future.
October News
In P.E. class, Kindergarten students are currently testing on the 8 locomotor skills that we have learned so far. The 8 locomotor skills consist of: walking, running, jumping, skipping, leaping, galloping, sliding and hopping. Students are demonstrating proper techniques necessary for completing all of the locomotor skills as well as differentiating between each of the locomotor skills. In November, the Kindergarten class will continue to learn about locomotor skills, and will also move into throwing and catching an object. 1st-3rd grade students are also testing on various Fitnessgram components to measure their fitness level. Some of the components consist of: pushups, curl ups, the sit and reach test for flexibility, and the pacer test for cardiovascular endurance. In November, students will be learning various skills related to volleyball, parachute and Chinese jump rope. Please encourage students to actively engage in a family walk or other exercise to promote healthy living at home.
November News
In November, students enjoyed many activities including our parachute unit. During this unit, students learned different ways to work together as a class to make the parachute form various shapes. Students also learned the importance of following directions and good listening skills to be successful in shaping the parachute. In December, we will start our annual Jump Rope for Heart event. This event will run from November 22nd- December 19th. During Jump Rope for Heart, students will learn the importance of taking care of our heart by exercising and eating healthy food that contributes to good heart health. Please help your student(s) learn more about the importance of helping others through this organization by raising money to help the American Heart Association. Come and celebrate with us on December 19th at our Jump Rope for Heart celebration.
December News
Thank you boys and girls for donating to Jump Rope for Heart this year. As a school we raised $3,501 this year, which is $270 more than last year’s fundraiser. 3rd grade students came on top as the top fundraising team. We are making a difference in other kids’ life and that is what you should be proud of. Parents, thanks for supporting your kids in raising money for this awesome organization. Your support means a lot to us!!! Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!
January / February News
During the month of January, students have been learning various skills needed to participate in the game of basketball. Students learned about using the pads of their fingers to dribble the ball, how to perform a chest pass and bounce pass, and lastly, how to shoot the basketball using the B.E.E.F. method (Balance, Elbow, Eyes, and Follow-through). Coming in February, students will be participating in a cup stacking unit to put hand-eye coordination into practice. Each student will have their own stack of cups to play with during class. We will learn various sequences for stacking the cups in class so that students can do it in their free time at home. We will continue to develop various skills and techniques through individualized games and team building activities.
March News
Students are currently learning how to upstack and downstack a set of cups. This cup stacking is developing multiple areas of their physical and mental ability. They are developing their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity (being able to use both left and right hand to do tasks). In March we will begin our unit on nutrition and ways we can eat healthy, also dive into our bowling unit to learn how to bowl properly.
